So I've been working on this project for a while at Starz Animation. I worked on the surfacing team to create uv's, shaders and textures on the sets and some background characters. I must say it's looking great. Everyone did such a good job in a very small amount of time.

Starz Animation Signs On for Adaptation of Yes, Virginia

TORONTO: Starz Animation Toronto will animate the Christmas story Yes, Virginia for a half-hour holiday special, presented by Macy's, to air on CBS on December 11.

The CG animation studio is producing the animation for the TV feature in conjunction with The Ebeling Group (TEG) and director Bitstate. Set in New York City during Christmas 1897, 8-year-old Virginia has second thoughts about the existence of Santa Claus, and poses a question to her local newspaper asking whether the Christmas legend is fact or fiction. Editor Francis Church takes the opportunity to rise above the simple question and addresses the philosophical issues behind it.

“We’re honored to be working with some very talented and creative people to craft what is sure to be a new holiday classic,” said David Steinberg, the head of the studio. “Our studio team is thrilled to have the opportunity to bring many of the high-quality feature tools we’ve developed in-house to raise the production value of this TV production.”

“The talent at Starz Animation Toronto is mind-blowing,” commented Pete Circuitt, the director for the Ebeling Group’s Bitstate. “After seeing the work this team did on movies like 9, we knew we had to look no further to make this piece as rich and enduring as it deserves to be.”

Hello Internet, I'm back, and I'll try to bring some new posts with me.

I was incredibly busy for a long while working on a show for National Geographic.

The show is called Journey to the Edge of the Universe. I managed to get a lot of shots in, but a lot of it was a very hectic rush. It was narrated by Alec Baldwin, so I can now say I've worked with him haha :) I will get some stuff uploaded on youtube soon to show that off a bit. It was a fun project and I worked with a lot of very good people. I will try to get all of their sites in the links section asap.

For now I'll post a sketch I did for a character I'm thinking of 3d-ifying for an animated story I'm toying with. His name is Melchizedek, and I will be trying to keep my blog up to date following the progress.

I've also finished a new cut of my demo reel with the help of a good friend, John Watson, so I will get that up on the youTube soon.

Zbrush3 Materials - EMAIL ME YOUR RESULTS!!!

So over the past few days I put together a pack of materials based on different casting and sculpting materials. I didn't create Erklaerbar's material from scratch, just adjusted the intensities and such. I didn't ask for permission from Zbrush Central member Erklaerbar, but I really liked his shader pack and this one was one of my fav's so I included it.

Other than that I created every material from scratch and I feel as a first shot they turned out pretty good! I hope everyone enjoys them!

Big Update 3d / 2d

So! I have finished a 2D Charcoal figure study and I am really coming along with the Inquisitor model.

The figure study took me 4 weeks to complete and is executed in charcoal. The rough draft/construct can be seen in my earlier posts.

As for the 3d model I am going to attempt to upload a 3d turntable, but if that doesn't work Ill try to fix it asap. ( first time uploading QT )

Also a bunch of progress pics below. I was also messing around with making Zmaterials. T'was fun. I really like the way the Inquisitor is coming along and I hope everyone thinks so as well, but PLEASE, if you have any critiques leave them in the contacts section. I can't thank everyone enough for all of the critical analysis so far. It really helps a lot. ( I still have to address the boots Rowan ;) ENJOY!!

Back again with an update on my Inquisitor model. He's almost there, I've just got to add a bunch of gizmo's and accoutrement's. The first pic is the model as it stands currently. The second and third pics were a small mock up of the direction I was headed in before I had modeled it. Some times it's a good idea to just drop everything you are doing and return to the silhouette, just to make sure you're still on the right track.

Just made the heel a bit shorter. After critiquing the boots with a friend I realized that they looked too feminine with the tall heels. So I brought that down a bit. Thats all for now!

New 3D and 2D Updates

First up! I just finished a rough draft of my latest charcoal figure study. Keep checking back soon for updates there. I work on it on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Secondly I have started working on my 3D characters boots. The laces are just stand-ins for now. Just fyi! :) I think I may need to beef up the guy a bit more, his feet seem a bit big in relation, but I'll worry about that for next post.

Thirdly, as promised my 2D study of Brutus re-taken with a digital SLR to show off the fine details. As always no smudging and done with graphite ( pencil, 2b, hb)

Some New 3d, 2d updates

Long time no post, once again :) I've been doing a lot of freelance work lately and just managed to carve out a bit of free time for this latest update. The basic sculpt of my latest characters pants is shown in the first pic. I just want to stress he WILL be wearing combat boots in the final sculpt, not pants tucked into socks, lol! I'm very happy with the way it is going, but the fun part of putting the small details will have to wait until another day at 3:30am lol!

The second post is of my latest classical study of Brutus, ( the guy who killed Cesar) executed completely in graphite without smudging! So far I have an eye done but I will try to post higher quality pics in future updates. This was taken with a crappy 5mp point and shoot digi-cam. I'll get the DSLR out for the next update promise! The construct (rough draft) of this drawing can be seen in my earlier post.

Last but not least the company for whom I often freelance for was kind enough to mention me on their profile page. It can be seen at www.infrared5.com although the majority of my work is still under development and not currently online. Thanks a bunch infrared5 team!

Cloth Sculpting

Cloth Sim with NCloth

Long time no update! So I taught myself the basic's of Ncloth today with little help on the subject online to be found. Lucky for me a lot of the basics of Maya's classic cloth carry over to Ncloth. I managed to get a decent cloth-sim that will be the base for sculpting the cloth for my Inquisitor character. I just want to stress that this is NOT the final cloth sculpt. I've pretty much just wiggled bits here and there and added a trim for this update. More sculpting of the cloth will follow very shortly. Gun is a new addition as well. Enjoy!

Inquisitor's Arm

I've been working on a lot of the mechanical bits for his suit in Maya although I don't feel it's ready for a post. I did however start working on his arm so I've posted some progress pics. I'm happy with the way it's turning out so far. Most of his arm will be covered with cloth and armor in the final comp so a lot of the detail will be focused on his fist because that will be pretty much the only bit of skin visible besides his face. Enjoy!

Inquisitor updates pt 1

Most of the work for the torso is going on in Maya right now so nothing too special to show there just yet. I have uploaded the time lapse sculpt( or at least what I didn't lose to Zb3 crashing ) of his head onto YouTube so that should be up by the end of today. Attatched are some more screens, not many changes, just a bit more wrinkles here and there, the nose is a bit less pinched at the openings and some more work has gone into the ears. He's getting there. Stay tuned...

The Inquisitor

So here's my latest WIP. After some critiques from a good friend of mine on my latest works, he suggested I should be working on more representational art pieces to show off my artistic potential. Heeding his advice I have resurrected an old project of mine. This is Eisenhorn, I had originally started creating him way back when I was just learning Zbrush2 and in an homage to how much that project taught me, I have decided to finish it. Here's what I have so far. Look forward to seeing a lot more soon. Timelapses as well.
